UWS approached SEMSA and Glasgow Life to deliver a guest lecture to inform and further discuss the issues faced by BME communities in sports development and coaching to students of the campus.
Overall, the lecture received great feedback from both tutors and students alike; as a result some of the students included the topic in their coursework.
This initial project led to a research project which allows UWS, Glasgow Life and SEMSA to come together and work in partnership.
The research is to determine the association between CVD risk factors in young people from BME backgrounds aged between 15-18. The research includes blood sampling, fitness testing and monitoring diets. Phase one of the project is complete and we are now moving towards phase two.
In addition to this SEMSA also took on a UWS placement student. This placement allowed the student to understand and work on all projects within the organisation including the SEMSA Games 2010 and the SWAP Project. This particular student student also has the oppourtunity to go to London as a part of the London exchange programme.
