UK Asian Football Championships 2011

The Scottish Ethnic Minority Sports Association (SEMSA), in partnership with Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, Celtic and Rangers Football Club hosted the UK Asian Football Championships in Glasgow.

Now in its thirteenth year the event continues to successfully raised the profile of Asians in football at all levels of the games. Seven teams from across the UK and one team from Scotland qualified to play in the tournament.

Preliminary games took place at Glasgow Green Football Centre on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd September 2011. The final held on Sunday 4th September 2011 at Celtic Park welcomed 1500 spectators from across Glasgow.

 This year’s teams included:

  • Coppice United
  • Sikh Hunters F.C
  • Sporting Bengal
  • London APSA
  • Punjab United Sports Wolverhampton
  • Punjab United Derby
  • SEMSA FC
  • Singh Sabha Barking FC

 

The event attracted large number of young people from both the black minority ethnic and indigenous communities. Using a popular sport such as football, awareness was raised amongst young people across Scotland that racism in all its forms is not acceptable and therefore acts to help break down cultural barriers.

This year’s finalists were London APSA and Scotland’s home side SEMSA. After a tremendous 90 minutes of skilful football, London APSA claimed the title of the UK Asian Football Championships 2011 Winners with the final score London APSA 1 SEMSA 0.

DEC East Africa Appeal

More than 10 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and the newly-formed Republic of South Sudan have been left in need of food, water and emergency healthcare because of one of the worst droughts in 60 years. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled Somalia due to the drought and conflict; parts of the country are now afflicted by famine.
